Given its start as a gathering place of artisans, Zakopane continues as an important cultural center for contemporary musicians, writers, and artists. In the past, the composer/pianist/president Jan Paderewski, the Nobel prize winning Henryk Sienkiewicz, and the painter Stanislaw Witkiewicz-Witkacy have been inspired by the Tatras. Today, the Witkiewicz Theater offers nationally acclaimed performances, and the W. Hasior art gallery displays excellent domestic talent. Another strong cultural draw are the Highlanders, who still cultivate and perform their traditional customs. In folk costume, dancing the folk dances, and singing the folk songs, the Highlanders are worth the trip alone. Likewise, their art is unique: wooden carvings, glass painting, and ornamented furniture arouse admiration in all who view them.
